ADVENT
A solitary amber note quavers in
a green arpeggio;
a waterless rasp scores the dewy
rustle at my window;
fumy, sapid plumelets peer thro'
the wind's tawny tresses;
the soil calls to distant mists in
a pale blue minor key;
sunflowers gather fading phrases
of Summer's diminuendo;
a robin trills in puzzlement, as his
song drops a quarter tone;
the candle flame glows quieter,
wearing a more diffuse halo;
Gran takes twelve steps 'pon the
cobblestone path,
'stead of her wonted eleven,
her gaze sweeping the cold purple
twilight, as tho' seeking the
first droplet of liquid gold
surrendered this Day to Night.
She looks upon me, a child of ten
Autumns, the Season's
light in her smile and eyes.
